Position Overview:
The EHSS (Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability) Manager plays a critical role within the organization and is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs to ensure the highest standards of safety and sustainability within our facility, while overseeing compliance with relevant regulations such as OSHA, EPA and local compliance guidelines. The EHSS Manager will conduct inspections, provide training, investigate incidents, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote a culture of safety and quality throughout the organization.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies and procedures specific to the food industry, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, regulatory and other relevant regulations.
- Conduct regular safety inspections of facilities, equipment, and processes to identify hazards and ensure compliance with sanitation and hygiene standards.
- Provide safety training to employees and contractors, including food defense, building security, sanitation safety procedures, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Investigate safety incidents, accidents, and near misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Collaborate with quality assurance, production, and supply chain teams to address safety concerns and implement preventive measures.
- Maintain records of safety and environmental inspections, LOTO, incidents, training sessions, and compliance documentation required by regulatory agencies.
- Stay current on emerging safety and environment trends, regulations, and best practices, and communicate relevant information to stakeholders.
- Conduct risk assessments and participate in the development of emergency response plans and crisis management procedures.
- Serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies during inspections and audits, ensuring timely responses to any findings or inquiries.
- Serve as point person for plant sustainability – interact with maintenance and production to manage waste streams and decrease environmental footprint for site through following things – electric usage reduction, gas reduction, waste stream reduction.
- Apply for any relevant grants to increase site sustainability.
- Lead and set up annual sustainability audit for manufacturing site.
- Collaborate with HR on employee return to work following workplace incidents.
- Key metrics: TRIR, lost time accidents, regulatory audits, plant sustainability scores and overall plant performance.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA and food safety regulations and standards.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and motivate employees at all levels of the organization.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to identify potential hazards and develop effective preventive measures.
- Attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Proficiency in MS Office and food safety management software.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to promoting a culture of workplace safety, food safety and quality excellence.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Proven experience in safety management, preferably in a food processing or manufacturing environment.
Work Environment:
Exposure to both the office setting and food manufacturing facility.
- Significant amount of time working at a computer station
- Occasional visits to various areas of the manufacturing floor
- Must wear required PPE while in all manufacturing areas.
- Moving parts and machinery are present in the plant.
Physical demands:
- Frequent sitting, standing, or walking.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs. occasionally.
- Ability to physically perform functions of repetitive motion, grasping, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, crouching, kneeling, stooping, balancing, and climbing.
- Noise levels will vary, higher noise levels exist while in the plant operations areas.
